Atkinson Road Primary Academy pupils become playwrights for the day with the Live Theatre, Newcastle

Two Year 4 classes from Atkinson Road Primary had the chance to step into the world of theatre this week, taking part in creative writing and performance workshops at the Live Theatre in Newcastle.
The session was held across two days, with each pupil receiving a specially designed Live Tales Playmakers booklet to guide them through the creative process. They explored what a script is, how to create interesting characters, how to develop imaginative stories and how to write believable, dynamic dialogue.
The day began with warm-up activities before pupils were joined by two professional actors from Live Theatre. After taking part in a pre-scripted activity, children moved into interactive workshops where they worked together to write their own stories, stepping into the role of both writer and director. To round off the day, pupils performed their creations in front of their peers.
“It was such a fantastic experience for the children, very interactive and engaging from start to finish. You could see their confidence growing throughout the day, with every pupil having the chance to be a writer, actor and director. The variety of activities kept everyone involved and it was wonderful to see them so immersed in the creative process. A huge thank you to Live Theatre for giving our pupils this opportunity.”
- Carolyn, a Year 4 Teacher at Atkinson Road
The workshops gave pupils the chance to develop their creativity, teamwork and confidence, while also experiencing first-hand the excitement of bringing stories to life on stage.
