Atkinson Road Primary Academy Recognised in New National Guidance
Back
Atkinson Road Primary Academy has been highlighted in newly published guidance from Speech and Language UK, AFASIC and NAPLIC on designing and commissioning specialist resourced provision (SRPs) for children whose primary need is speech and language. Children with these needs make up around 24% of SEND pupils in mainstream schools across England.
The guidance draws on successful examples of SRPs, including Atkinson Road’s 16-place provision, showing how specialist support can help children build communication skills while remaining fully included in mainstream school life. The Academy’s provision is staffed by specialist teachers and speech and language therapists, offering intensive support for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) or speech sound disorder.
"Our resourced provision helps children build communication skills while staying included in mainstream school life, with strong support for families throughout."
- Lisa Macaulay, Head Teacher at Atkinson Road
The guidance sets out practical advice for local authorities, multi-academy trusts and schools looking to create or expand SRPs, including clear eligibility and admissions processes, specialist staffing models, evidence-based interventions, whole-school training and strong parental involvement.
This recognition is a testament to Atkinson Road’s commitment to inclusive education, ensuring that children with speech and language challenges can achieve their full potential. The Academy continues to provide high-quality, supportive learning for all pupils, helping them belong, thrive, and succeed.
